Index of Subjects --_000_D828AF18F9CABA4AADDA9D0F9808ED761CD643A9A0bsc2008bsceoc_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Randy, As of this morning, out of 13 routes for which I've got this year's data (9= received here at the office and 4 picked out from NatureNB and NatureNS), = only one had a NSWO (I'm not counting the route with 18 owls in PEI, I thin= k there were 3 NSWO on that one). It could be that the later surveys will p= ick them up this year. It might be something worth looking at once all the = data for this year are in. As of earlier= this week, the northbound migration was still strong at Whitefish Point (M= ichigan), with over 100 NSWO's banded in one night. If our birds are following a similar pattern, then earlier Nocturnal Owl Su= rveys, like the one my wife and I did (zero NSWO's), may not represent this= year's breeding population well. HOWEVER, last year was a cruddy breeding = season here, but was very good more centrally in the continent, implying th= at if there is strong fidelity to a nesting area, then maybe the low NSWO n= umbers on surveys is representative (Greg - correct me if I'm wrong here - = I haven't been keeping track but my impression of people's NOS reports is t= hat there are low NSWO numbers). If there isn't a strong attachment to the = breeding grounds, then perhaps some of those huge numbers of last fall's so= uth-bound migrants may swerve this way as they come north. It would be interesting to see the results of the NOS's plotted as number o= f NSWO against date - i.e. are later surveys picking up more birds? At this point, all my nest boxes for owls are empty, including the one rece= ntly morphed into a Kestrel box...ya gotta hate when they clearcut all the = way around your nest box tree like that...it's a real jaw-dropper. I'll be = going up to SW Cape Breton in the next few days to check six boxes there.
