Hi all
I am going to try to update some sightings from Pictou Co. and nearby for the last few weeks. I am going to start with Sat.. Apr. 19.
A few C. Redpolls and Tree Sparrows atill at my feeder in Plymouth.
Iceland Gull-1 first spring New Glasgow Water Treatment Plant

Since I did my 2 Owls routes the second week of April, I decided I might look at one that was abandoned in the Three Brooks- Toney Mills area of Pictou Co starting along the Protection Rd. I wanted to check out the road and the stops at daylight and maybe contribute a few sightings for that atlas square. The road was pretty bad, but I made it through. Along the route I had 8-10 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, BROWN CREEPERS singing, a RAVEN nest ( with the sound coming from it, I wondered if young might be present although it seems a bit early yet), RUFFED GROUSE drumming and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET singing. I briefly saw a small orangish "Lep" but it moved to quickly to I.D.
From the Caribou I. lighthouse there were about 12 adult N. Gannets diving in the distance. The Northumberland Strait had a few ice flows, but was mostly ice -free in the area.

On Sunday APRIL 20, I arose early and decided to atlas in the James River atlas square of Antigonish Co. I had a pair of BARRED OWLS dueting and several AMERICAN WOODCOCK and a WILSON'S SNIPE in the vicinity of Beaver Meadows. The dawn chorus revealed 3 WINTER WRENS singing. There were also singing RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH and a non-singing WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and NORTHERN FLICKERS. Juncos and Robins were abundant and several Evening Grosbeaks flew over.
I continued on to the Haggart's Lake square. I had a Fox Sparow, singing PALM WARBLER, HERMIT THRUSH, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET(3), drumming RUFFED GROUSE as well as Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Brown Creeper and N. Flicker. There were 10 Ring-necked Ducks on MacKay L. as well as 3 m. Common Mergansers.
A pair of RED-TAILED HAWKS copulated on a power pole.
I then made an late afternoon visit to the Antigonish Landing Wildlife Management area which is under housing development assult on the borders. Some control devices were in place, but the development is very close to the waters edge in several places and the majority of the trees on the hillside have been felled. The watter was mud-coloured from run-off.
The landing had 20-30 Green-winged Teal, several A. Wigeon and 3 Gadwall amoung the usual waterfowl. There were also 2 BLACK-HEADED GULLS present. At the nearby sewage treatment plant 3 male and 1 female NORTHERN SHOVELER and 4 WOOD DUCKS- 3M, 1FEM.

On the way home, I heard 2 BARRED OWLS dueting in the Woodbun area of Pictou Co. and another Barred Owl giving a single hoot in the Chance Harbour area. It is not too early for atlassing and some species are easier to get this time of year than later- hawks and creepers!
I will try to update previous weeks in another email.
cheers
ken
