I was way off in the woods this morning following a bearing on my compass...I looked up and there was a mid-sized Black Bear looking directly at me. Well, that was disturbing. It scurried down the tree, whose base was behind a hummock, so I couldn't see if it just stayed there or moved away (it didn't show on either side of the hummock). After backtracking a bit, I looked back and could not see the bear and decided to abort that part of the morning's trip. This was my second encounter of a bear (other than from the protection of a house/car) in over 20 years of frequent backwoods work/play. The first was at Meat Cove (the name suggests a foreshadowing that didn't happen), and my heart POUNDED then; this time, I was much less affected, but still concerned. I figure one or two more encounters like that and I'll be gettin' so cocky that I'll chase the bear down myself.
