Aquatic Field Trip Tonight at Hemlock Ravine 8pm

Hi All, Tonight some of us are making a visit to Hemlock Ravine to check out
Wood Frogs, Yellow-spotted Salamanders and Aquatic Insects. If you are
interesting in joining us either give me a call at 864-0802 before 6pm or be at
Julie's Pond/the Heart Shaped Pond by 8pm. All ages welcome and be sure and
bring boots and flashlights.

On April 3, I made quick stop at Hemlock Ravine to check on Julie's Pond. It
was a cold night with little activity but small numbers of both Wood Frogs,
Yellow- spotted Salamanders were present. The most easily viewed aquatic
insect in the pond at that time was the aptly named Backswimmer. A bonus insect
was a Morrison's Sallow that was attracted to the light and gave be a great
look by landing on my leg. These moths are often active during warmer periods
of the winter. Checking my personal observations for the past several years I
noticed that April is the month that I most often encountered these Noctuid
Moths.
