I sent this message to the list earlier today. I see it has not been
delivered (as of 8 p.m., whereas several other messages sent since
mine have (????), so I'll try again and see what happens.

YOUNG CRESCENT MOON SUCCESSFULLY OBSERVED
I started scanning about 8:05 p.m. (about 15 minutes after
sunset); it was tough at first, but by 8:12 p.m. I had it in my 10 X
50 binocular view. An extremely thin sliver of moon against a bright
sky background. It got easier as the sky darkened. By 8:25 p.m. I
could pick it out with naked-eye. After which I started to get a
photo or two. Below is a link to three that I posted. If you look
closely you can see the dark part of the Moon lit by earthshine.
When these photos were taken the moon was about 19.8 h from New Moon;
when I first saw it in binoculars it would have been 19.3 h old.
which is a new record for me. I was able to follow the thin cusp of
light until it was covered up by the "rising" North Mountain at about
8:54 p.m.

My photo effort last evening was posted on Spaceweather.Com http://
www.spaceweather.com/
Today's Spaceweather page under Crescent Moon Alert, more images.

You can try for the crescent again tonight if it remains clear. It
will be a little easier but still a neat sight. The crescent will be
brighter and further east of the sun so you can wait until the sky
gets darker. Between 8:30 and 9:30 it should be a pretty neat sight.
Moon sets a bit after 10 p.m.

SPACE STN and COMMON SNIPE
While observing and photographing the crescent Moon, the SPACE
STATION made a nice pass also heard very clearly, a series of
winnowing from a COMMON SNIPE. This used to be a common spring,
evening sound in Avonport but it is now a rare treat.

Tonight the ISS pass is at 41 degree maximum across the north
between 9:09 and 9:10 p.m.

Sherman
