April 6, 2008 - About 50 unidentified WAXWINGS flew by our Wolfville
house; presumably they were part of the 300 seen yesterday here.

April 7, 2008 - Another bright Sunny Spring day, with temperatures up
to 11 C. in The Valley. At the home feeders, an adult WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW was a different individual from the younger one seen just
once a couple of days ago. Also a GOLDFINCH WITH A QUITE YELLOW BACK
was a nice sign of the season.

Two FLORAL HAPPENINGS noted today: ALDER CATKINS are nearly open in a
cattail marsh west of Sheffield Mills, and in Wolfville female flower-
buds of SILVER MAPLE are opening.

Port Williams sewage ponds: 2 CANADA GEESE together, a male RING-
NECKED DUCK, and 3 MALLARDS (a m/f pr and a m).

East of Port Williams along river: a hovering buteo hawk, probably a
red-tailed hawk (not a rough-leg).

Van Nostrand's Ponds (Starr's Point): 3 male RING-NECKED DUCKS, 40
CANADA GEESE, a male MALLARD, a single male C. GRACKLE, a single
male RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, and a damaged? (2 holes) COCOON of a
CECROPIA MOTH low in a roadside ditch willow (about 1 metre high).

Canning Aboiteau: 55 CANADA GEESE.
Canning: 300 more CANADA GEESE.
Harris' Pond (Canning): nearly all still iced up.

Hennigar's Marsh (west of Sheffield Mills): no birds seen at all.

Saxon Street Pond: ice nearly all gone, 5 COMMON MERGANSERS (2 m/f
prs + a m), 2 BLACK DUCKS together, 6 probable GREEN-WINGED TEALS,
and the red-tailed? hawk on the nest.

Along Fred Thomas Road (ne. of former poultry plant), about 1500-2000
GULLS (no LBBGs detected), many of them feverishly active on and near
the poultry? manure pile.

Canard Pond had 300 more GULLS, a single male MALLARD, no other ducks.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville, 542-9204
