Hello,

I'm new to the listserve. I had a canoe on the Gaspereau River last =
Saturday below the bridge at White Rock. I had to rock and hack my way =
through the overnight ice to get to the main channel, which was open due =
to flow from power generation. I find it's a great time of year for =
waterfowl because, like spring-fevered canoeists, they head straight for =
what little open water there is. Here's what was there that I could =
identify with certainty:

3 immature bald eagles (as always)
2 black ducks (M&F)
2 wood ducks (M&F)
26+ common mergansers (many more M than F).

I had seen a M&F pair of mergansers early in the paddle and was feeling =
lucky, so I was floored to arrive at the lower end of the headpond and =
discover so many of them hanging around. I've never seen wood ducks this =
early; I don't know what normal for them is. There's a nest box in the =
area.

I worked from home yesterday, and my backyard in town was a busy place:

1 downy woodpecker
2 cardinals (M&F), who have been visiting us all winter
Also, many of chickadees, doves, junkos, jays, waxwings, and sparrows =
(I'm an idiot with sparrows, a problem I intend to evetually correct as =
best I can).

Andrew Steeves
Wolfville
