Subject: ABO birding position for May 1-31/08 on Bon Portage Island

Hi Jim,=20

=20

The Atlantic Bird Observatory is looking for someone to conduct our spring
surveys. I was hoping that you could send out the following ad to Blomidon
Naturalist Society members or anyone else who may be interested in this
opportunity.=20

=20

Thanks very much,=20

The Atlantic Bird Observatory is seeking help during the upcoming spring
migration season (May 1-31st, 2008). We need an individual who would be
willing to live on Bon Portage Island (southwest Nova Scotia) for an entire
month and conduct our daily census (1 hour bird survey starting 1 hour afte=
r
sunrise). We are primarily interested in the migratory patterns of
passerines and ideally, the individual would need to know how to identify
passerines by sight and sound. The island is a fabulous spot to bird during
migration, has a breeding colony of over 50,000 pairs of Leach=B9s Storm
Petrels and is well known locally due to Evelyn Richardson=B9s book We Keep A
Light.=20

=20

We are able to cover travel expenses, food and lodging (within reason =AD
caviar is not a staple), plus pay for your time. Individuals will stay in =
a
rustic cabin with basic comforts (wood stove, kerosene lamps, coleman
cookstove). There is an island care taker who oversees activities on the
island, (e.g., boat crossings, general upkeep of facilities) and there will
be other researchers on the island from time to time, so you will not be
completely isolated for an entire month.

=20

Another option is to have several individuals participate for shorter
durations (e.g., week long periods).

=20

The spring season can be quite warm and beautiful, but typically it is
characterized by fog, storms (which can prevent boat crossings for several
days), rain, cold and dampness. The island is also quite rugged (cobble
rocks are hard to walk on), so the individual would need to be relatively
fit.=20

=20

If anyone is interested in this position, please contact Trina Fitzgerald
immediately at trina.fitzgerald@acadiau.ca

=20

Thanks for considering this opportunity - Trina
