Hi James,

I don't have any particular expertise in this area, however, I can
tell you that molds are fungi. There are a great variety of molds,
however, they differ from fungi like 'mushrooms' only in not having
their filaments united into large fruiting structures. Identifying
molds is not a simple task and usually requires microscopic
examination of the hyphae (filaments) of the molds and its fruiting
bodies. There is an excellent website at the University of Toronto on
molds which I thoroughly recommend as an introduction:

http://www.botany.utoronto.ca/ResearchLabs/MallochLab/Malloch/Moulds/Moulds.html

Best wishes,

Chris
