Hi all
For the most part the weather was not bad in the New Glasgow area today( March 8). Rick Ferguson and I took a little tour of the usual gathering areas for wintering birds in the Pictou-Caribou Harbour areas. Many of these areas are breaking up with the 15C temp. and south winds we had today.
There were still at least 50-70 C. Redpolls at my feeder in Plymouth. At the New Glasgow sewage treatment plant and the East River in that area, the fem.EURASIAN WIGEON was joined by 2 male AMERICAN WIGEON, the first I have seen in the area this winter. The Black Ducks, Mallards, Greater Scaup, Canada Geese, Common ( ~100) and Hooded Mergansers( ~10) were joined in that area by 3 GADWALL. There were about 6-8 Iceland Gulls in that area as well.
At the Trenton Big Gut bridge, there were ~12 BUFFLEHEAD with the Scaup. In the small channel outflow north of the NSPC Trenton, an imm. GREAT CORMORANT was along the rocks- a winter survivor. Most of the East River was now ice free and mostly devoid of ducks that were there all winter although there were a few Canada Geese and Common Goldeneye here and there. There were a few ducks along the Pictou Causeway, but the huge over-wintering rafts of ducks had moved on. A number (1000+) Scaup were found downstream of the Loch Broom bridge. An Eagle was at the Durham nest but only standing near it. No Eagles were seen at the Lyons Brook nest.
Two male N.PINTAIL were noted in a wet field in Lyons Brook. There was quite a bit of open water in Pictou Harbour and only a couple of Iceland Gulls at Pier C. A lone Robin (likely overwintering) was noted near the Jitney Trail in Pictou.
At Seaview Cemetery, a pair of Bald Eagles were at the nest the male on the rim and the female appeared to be sitting on the nest or at least quite crouched down. Seems a bit early for here. An over-wintering fem. BELTED KINGFISHER was in the channel below the nest. There were still a few-10-15 Bald Eagles with the Ravens at Bayview and a couple more Iceland Gulls. In Central Caribou 4 PIne Grosbeaks were near a feeder at Peterson's Cornor. Charlie Kendell reported a NORTERHN SHRIKE at Three Brooks, but we missed seeing it. There was one in that area for the count week of the Pictou Harbour CBC. at Waterside PP, a fem. NORTHERN HARRIER was unsuccessful at hunting the marsh. Charlie Kendall photographed a Gadwall earlier in the day here. We noted about 40 species for the day. A nice big Porcupine was seen eating grass? on Caribou I. Singing Song Sparrows and a singing Junco were noted today.
cheers
Ken
