Feb. 29, 2008 - Earlier this week, on Feb. 26, Pat Hawes saw 16 CANADA GEESE flying along the Cornwallis River near Port Williams. And Brenda and Bill Thexton have been seeing up to 150 CANADA GEESE during the past 10-14 days or so in the Canning area. This afternoon I drove to Hortonville and found the NEARLY-ALL-WHITE RED-TAILED HAWK. The location as usual is east and south of Exit 10 (Hortonville/Grand Pre/Wolfville) along Highway 101. Drive south over the highway overpass, past the highway ramps, then go left on the dirt road that parallels Highway 101. The hawk often sits perched in a small tree just south of the farmhouse, or on a fence post or telephone pole or small tree on the periphery of that large open field south of the farmhouse. But today it was at the far eastern end of that dirt road, perched in a very small tree at the end of a line of trees along the edge of a big field west of the Gaspereau River. The hawk flashily flew a short distance south to a taller tree in the same row of trees, in fact in the exact same spot where I had spotted it several years ago to start this string of winters for the same individual bird. Now I must do my homework to rediscover what year that was -- I recall that I was driving from Wolfville to Truro to accept a conservation award from N.S. Dept. of Environment on behalf of the Blomidon Naturalists Society, for its role in preserving the chimney habitat in Wolfville for the chimney swifts. I must add that today I did not see the individual hawk's identifying spots of dark pigment on the top back of the head, but my view was inadequate, and earlier we heard from Judy Tufts and Bernard Forsythe that those markings plus dark eyes had been seen again this year. Also in the BALD EAGLE NEST just east of Wolfville, southeast of the junction of Highway 1 and Eye Road, an adult BALD EAGLE was sitting deeply in the position of a bird INCUBATING? one or more eggs (??). Seems awfully early but ....?? At Greenwich, I couldnąt see any sign of an eagle on that nest just north of Noggins Farm Market; however, in recent days at least one eagle has been seen standing or sitting high on that nest -- at this time of year, of course, most eagles would be remodelling their nests by adding and rearranging sticks.
