Perhaps we need to define what we mean by "enjoying nature". Would you =
consider all the people who crowd the beaches in the summer as being =
among those who enjoy nature?

  Hello Bob, Blake, others:
I would love to see some hard statistics about participation rates =
in nature-related activities, before getting too depressed. Right now =
all we have is data for hunting and fishing, two areas where you need an =
annual license to (legally) participate. For other nature-related =
activities all we have is impressions.
You may not be seeing many campers or hikers out there because they =
may have gone further afield. or perhaps your particular destination may =
be currently out of fashion. And how about brand-new nature-related =
activities such as Geocaching, mountain biking, sea kayaking, or =
surfing? What about the trail building revolution that has hit the =
province maybe 5 -10 years ago, and all the trail walkers and =
bicyclists? Where were they a generation or two ago? There have been =
some major shifts in the way we enjoy "nature" in general. I wouldn't be =
all that pessimistic....
