Hi there,

Not many new species were reported this week to be added to
the Depths of Winter List. Surely there are a few more out
there? Last year in February there were 151 species of birds
reported in Nova Scotia. Missing so far, but found last year in
February, are Redhead, Gray Partridge, American Bittern, Cooper's
Hawk, Gyrfalcon, Sandhill Crane, Killdeer, Ruddy Turnstone, Red Knot,
American Woodcock, Black-legged Kittiwake, Razorbill, Snowy Owl,
Long-eared Owl, Winter Wren, Brown Thrasher, Western Tanager, Field
Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, "Ipswich" Savannah Sparrow,
Lincoln's Sparrow, Harris's Sparrow, Dickcissel, and Yellow-headed
Blackbird. It has already been remarked that this seems to be a poor
winter for alcids and sparrows, and an exceptional winter for
finches. And of course, some species have been found this year which
were not around at all last year ...

Many thanks to all who have contributed sightings for this
survey of diversity during the doldrums of winter!

         Cheers,

         Patricia L. Chalmers
