Today I had a Hoary Redpoll for the first time at my feeders. It stood out
as lighter than the other redpolls with the naked eye. Through binoculars,
the main field marks were quite apparent; lightly streaked sides, white
rump, and distinctively shorter bill.

The strong northerly winds of the last two days has brought the ice from
PEI over to this side of the Northumberland Strait and with it, hundreds of
Gray Seals and their new pups. Because this side was ice free, the invading
ice was pushed up right to the shore, bringing the seals closer than I've
seen them in quite some time. I've had good looks at the seals close to the
beach.
