Just to add to the Redpoll discussion - There are large numbers in this area
but they don't seem to need feeders except opportunistically. We are located
up on a hill above Hantsport with a clear view to the Avon River and much of
the town area. The Redpolls rarely come to my feeders in numbers, but you
can certainly see them going by. Yesterday a huge flock suddenly appeared
looking like a snow squall and veered towards me instead of going by. Within
seconds the feeders were covered and the entire deck and patio was swarming
with birds. After a minute or two it was clear that most were not finding
much so I opened the patio door to throw out more food. They vanished en
masse. They did not come back although I saw the flock go by twice more in
the next hour or so. I have seen large flocks before, both here and in
Windsor - they are clearly not hurting for food.
