Hi all
Shannon Queen and Ethan Huner joined me today, Jan. 7, for a nice outing to Sober I. (HRM)). While scoping a group of 68 Purple Sandpipers we were surprised by a Short-eared Owl which appeared from behind a hill and suddenly saw us as it was right over our heads. It made a smucking sound and turned away from us but spooked the sandpipers which settled back down again. I was able to photograph the unusual coloured sandpiper which has now been seen at this same spot for 5+ years. This purple sandpiper has a dark head, back and neck but almost white wings. Really stands out in the crowd. I must check my records to see when I first saw this bird.
There was also a pair of Harlequin that flew in while were were looking at the sandpipers. A nice flock of 55 Black Scoter were seen from the same spot.
There were 4 Dovekies at Harrigan Cove, 2 at Port Dufferin and 1 at Sheet Harbour Passage. We saw 3 Gray Jays in the drive from Stellarton to Sheet Harbour.
cheers
Ken
