Hello,

I suspect it will be awhile before the final tally of species from the Halifax/Dartmouth CBC held yesterday will be available but I have just finished compiling the Rainbow Haven area count with several interesting species having been reported. Due in part to the impending storm we had only 3 field parties comprised of 4 birders and I have also one feeder report.

Species of significance were a Short-eared Owl in a clump of conifers at Rainbow Haven, a juvenile Cooper's Hawk (pictures taken) behind Cole Harbour Funeral Home on Cole Harbour Rd at Bissett Rd, the Brown Thrasher in Colby Village at the same feeder it has been frequenting for well over a month, and a Northern Shrike next door to the Thrasher residence. Two Fox Sparrows were seen.

American Tree Sparrows and Common Redpolls were at several locations and a very large flock of Snow Buntings seemed to be in constant flight at Rainbow Haven. The large Canada Goose flock (~5500 birds) found open water in Cole Harbour as did over 800 American Black Duck and a smattering of other species.

Although the snowstorm shortened our count day by 1.5 hours, until then although it was cool (-13 C to begin), there was little wind and really quite a good day to be in the field.

Now if only the Frigatebird reported today (in Cow Bay) had been seen yesterday, it would have been an even more remarkable day. At least we have it for the count period!

Seasons Greetings to All,

Bob McDonald
Halifax
