Margaret, I would think that possibly it might have been a short-tailed shrew? They are common and active all winter and about the size and shape of a meadow vole but slate-grey in colour with a pointed snout and a quite short tail, not a naked tail like a rat would have. I didn't really think it was a mole. Has eyes and no thingy on nose. It is charcoal grey, doesn't look like a mouse I am familiar with so maybe a young small rat (?) It ran up a support that is at an angle and then the vines make quite a heavy support. It was there a few minutes ago......lordy I hope we don't end up with the big rats again. They weren't pleasant things, It would challenge as we went in and out the house. We had to dispatch it I am afraid......I was most happy to see it go. There must be a book at the library I can get that has small creatures in it. Maybe I can find something there.
