Yesterday, siting at my desk about 4 pm, I caught some movement outside my upstairs window and had a brief impression of a relatively large hawk flying through the trees near ground level. Thinking this was pretty unusual, I had a look around and discovered a barred owl out in the open in the snow defending a recent kill from a harassing goshawk. After about 15 minutes, the hawk gave up, and the owl retired to a tree with its meal. I had a pretty good view from the bedroom window, but didn't get a photo of the hawk, which insisted on making unpredictable forays. When the owl finally revealed its catch, it moved pretty fast, and I couldn't tell what the prey was. It was dark coloured (too dark for a hare this time of year?), about the size of a pigeon (not as big as the feral cat that regularly kills small birds and rodents around my yard).
