Hi all; In advance of the landfall of Hurricane Noel I did a seawatch off Chebucto Head from 1245 to 1500. Dave Curry and Mike King were on station when I left, and they may have more to add. Just one bird that seems Noel-related. probable Gull-billed Tern, first winter. I puzzled over this medium-sized tern when I saw it, about 1300. I didn't have any field guide with me, and called it a possible Roseate, but upon examination of the field guides Gull-billed Tern was a much better fit, especially with the wing shape, the lack of black on the upperparts save for a bit of smudge along the trailing edge of the primaries, and the unmarked head (no black cap). Other birds: Northern Gannet - 3000+ Black-legged Kittiwake - 3 Common Murre - 4 Leach's Storm-Petrel - 1 Common Loon - 5 Red-throated Loon - 1 Cheers, ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blake Maybank maybank@ns.sympatico.ca Editor, "Nova Scotia Birds" author, "Birding Sites of Nova Scotia" http://maybank.tripod.com/BSNS.htm 144 Bayview Drive White's Lake, Nova Scotia, B3T 1Z1, Canada (902) 852-2077 -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
