Did a whirlwind tour of NS this week, with not much time for birding. However, did find a late WHIMBREL at Hawk Point, Cape Sable Island on Oct. 17th, as well as a RED-EYED VIREO. Probably not even remotely late nor unusual for this part of the province, but the latest of either I've ever seen in the Maritimes. At the family farm in Mill Brook (on the north side of the Cobequids) an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE sang a beautiful song the afternoon of Oct. 15th. Atop Nuttby Mountain, I heard then saw a male PINE GROSBEAK calling in flight (reminded me of a goldfinch) Oct. 19th. Oddly perhaps, it was heading to NW. Brian Dalzell Tatamagouche, NS.
