Hi all
Saturday Sept. 28 was an excellent day for birding on Big I. despite the drizzle/fog in the morning and wind in the afternoon. I tallied just shy of 70 species on Big I. Nothing was too rare but there were some nice finds and big numbers of some birds. Highlights were an imm. Peregrine Falcon dining from a snag as seen from the Wharf Road, 30+ Storm Petrels-( Wilson's to my eye), hundreds of N. Gannets, a Sora Rail flushed from the big marsh at high tide, 2 Horned Larks, and ~ 35 Great Blue Heron. A Peregrine also made a cruise throgh the dunes at the east end from a quick look it appeared to be an adult.
At one point I observed 600 Scoters fly by the entrance to Merigomish Harbour .
There were 20 White-winged in the group and the rest appeared to be Surf Scoter. About 100 sparrows were identified with the following breakdown- 20 Song, 32 Savanah, 10 Swamp, 50 White-throat, 4 Junco and 1 Lincolns. Only 7 species of warbler noted--9 Common Yellowthroat, 1 Palm, 5 Myrtle, 1 Parula, 3 Magnolia, 1 Black and White, and 2 Black-throated Green. There were 4 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 2 Common Terns and 100 Bonapartes Gulls. Here is the list of 13 species of shorebird seen.
American Golden Plover-1
Black-bellied Plover-9
Semipalmated Plover-100
Piping Plover-1
Greater Yellowlegs-5
Lesser Yellowlegs-5
Pectoral Sandpiper-10
Dunlin-50
