Sept. 15, 2007 -- JAPANESE KNOTWEED, alias ³BAMBOO², is in bloom in Wolfville. Also many NORWAY MAPLES show conspicuously brown and wilted leaves (like the white ashes at Canning back in July or August? (rust fungus infestation??)), from a combination with TAR SPOT FUNGUS (definite) and perhaps also ANTRHACNOSE FUNGUS?? But the Norway maples in town show lots of variation as to leaf colour, with many trees still having green, unwilted leaves but lots of the tar spot signs; no doubt this variability has to do with resistances of different varieties of Norway maple. Like last year, the maples I am noticeing with the brown, dry leaf edges that I think is a symptom of ANTHRACNOSE are primarily sugar maples (although some of the Norway maples victimized by tar spot also seem to perhaps have anthracnose). Dianne Thorpe in Wolfville found an adult leaf beetle of the genus Calligrapha (family Chrysomelidae) inside her house. I have it pickled now in 70% alcohol for Chris Majka¹s attention for identification to species, at the N.S. Museum of Nat. Hist.
