June, I couldn't tell whether you had actually seen kettles of broad-winged
hawks or not, vs. just predicting that today would be good for that
phenomenon?

And Gayle, a "kettle" refers to the formation of circling hawks, mostly
buteos but also other kinds, that follow rising warm thermal air currents
and get concentrated into a cylinder of circling birds of prey that number
in the hundreds in N.S. and up to thousands in Mexico, Central America, and
perhaps northern South America.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

Hello June,

I am not familiar with the term 'kettles' in relationship to (I assume)
groups of birds? Could you clarify, please?

Also, today, in my backyard, and for the 2nd day in a row, here in
Dartmouth, Prince Albert Rd. area, there have been several Garter snakes
where I have seen none all summer long. One in particular, and a small one,
about 10 inches would not move from its coiled up spot and when I approached
it, struck out at me. Guess it just liked its lovely sunny spot and didn't
want to be bothered. I just let it be. Must admit, I am very pleased to see
them. I always think it's a good sign of a healthy backyard if you have
them!

Cheers!

Hi Everyone

Favorable conditions today for a hundreds of broad-winged hawks forming
kettles near the village.

Lots of sharp-shinned hawks, kestrels and merlins. Also sighted a monarch
