Lepsters - today in Eastern Passage flying around viburnums I encountered a
rare sighting for this time of year because it was blue. It is a female . It
is probably Celastrina neglecta ( Summer Azure) but looks more the Cherry
Gally Azure ( Celastrina sp) dorsally which is virtually unknown in NS and
flies in July .Female Summer Azure have a chalky white to pale grey
underside. This one has dark grey shading along the the margin of the HW
like form "marginata" of the Spring Azure.

Only until 1999 this species was thought to be the "summer form " of Spring
Azure.

Second & third generations are rare except in Ont. according to Layberry at
al in Buterflied of Canada.

Ferguson (19550 lists two rare dates for Spring Azure .Oct 4 1917 @ MacNabs
Island and Aug 9, 1946 @ Annapolis . Normal flite time for Spring Azure is
April 22- july 19. No flight time is known in NS for Summer Azure. These
late vouchers of Fergusons could very well have been Summer Azure.

In any case , a rare and nice surprise to see this on beautiful Labor Day
weekend.

	Cheers , DB
