Aug. 19, 2007 - ROBIE TUFTS NATURE CENTRE AT DUSK: 26+ WOLFVILLE CHIMNEY
SWIFTS counted by Ted Wolkowski -- observations from 8:00 to 8:40 p.m.
(Sunset 8:16) -- 2 swifts entered chimney at 8:03, then 21 more in at
8:14-8:16, 2 at 8:27, 1 at 8:31 -- variable clouds with scattered showers,
calm, 18 C.

Aug. 20, 2007 - MIDDLETON REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL CHIMNEY AT DUSK: 34 (+5)
TOTAL CHIMNEY SWIFTS AND A MERLIN -- observations by Jim Wolford from 8:10
to 8:50 p.m. (Sunset 8:14 or so?) -- 29 swifts entered gradually from 8:15
to 8:28, then a lull while about 10 swifts flew about, then at 8:33 a MERLIN
flew past the chimney from the south very slowly with vibrating shallow
wing-strokes (and the swifts ³escorted² it away to the north), then 5 more
swifts entered gradually from 8:35 to 8:38 -- at least 5 more swifts were
not seen to go into chimney -- clear sky, calm, 17 C.

Then a BONUS came, after being alerted by Sherman Williams by e-mail, when
at about 8:58 there was a clear pass from west to east of the Endeavour
Space Shuttle separated from the International Space Station, at about twice
the height of the planet Jupiter in the south. The sky was just dark enough
and the timing was just right, being right after the end of the ³swifts¹
show². Thanks, Sherman, for the alert.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
