Hi All,

There have been no (or very few) postings regarding shorebirds on the Minas
Basin this year so, not knowing what to expect, Wendy and I drove to
Evangeline Beach, followed by The Guzzle, in mid- to late-afternoon on
Saturday, after the BNS-sponsored Sedge walk with Tyler.

Unfortunately, the tide was well out so we were unable to make any positive
identifications. We did see 3-4 largish flocks of peeps, each of 250-400
birds. I suspect that most of these were Semi-palm and Least Sandpipers,
and as well we saw perhaps a dozen larger birds (possibly yellowlegs)
separate from these groups. Just as we were leaving The Guzzle, a Merlin
flew by about 20 feet away from us, perhaps looking for dinner. It had no
success while we watched.

We have seen Black Swallowtails here before but Saturday was not a good day
for leps in the eastern Valley!!

Cheers,

Bob McDonald
