Hi Lance,

Adult lily beetles (Lilioceris lilii) are actually known to feed on a
huge range of host plants (I have records from 46 species), including
Solanum dulcamara, Solanum laciniatum, and Solanum tuberosum,
although only plants in the genera Lilium and Fritillaria are the
normal hosts on which beetles can complete their reproductive cycle.

Adult beetles are aposematic (with warning colours to warn potential
predators) and are believed to have compounds that cause them to be
distasteful to predators. It is thought that they may sequester
compounds from Asiatic lily hosts since these plants have chemical
compounds which, in turn, make them distasteful. Could lily beetles
do so from Solanum dulcamara? No one knows.

If anyone is really interested in this topic there is an excellent
recent paper available:

Ernst, C., Cappuccino, N, and Arnason, J.T. 2007. Potential novel
hosts for the lily leaf beetle Lilioceris lilii Scopoli (Coleoptera:
Chrysomelidae) in eastern North America. Ecological Entomology, 32:
45-52.

Cheers!

Chris
