I've heard that sometimes feathers that are normally red are yellow because the pigment in the feathers failed to oxidize, or something along those lines. It goes away after the bird molts, so I guess that means it's not genetic.

Subject: [NatureNS] Odd Purp Finch

Today we noticed a Purp Finch at our feeder that had yellow (not bright but
quite noticable) head, breast & all areas that are normally purple. I guess
this may be called a Golden Finch. No photo yet.
Any ideas about this?
