Hi Terry and other Regional Biologists:

George Boyd is dealing in a product by the name of Bobbex that he has been
able to bring in from the US, on an experimental basis. It apparently works
very well. George can be contacted at
g.boyd@ns.sympatico.ca Home: 847-0002.

There is continuing research being conducted by a Master's Student at NSAC
under the supervision of
Dr. Vilis Nams
Nova Scotia Agricultural Collage
Dept of Environmental Sciences
Office Address
P.O. Box 550 Truro, Nova Scotia Canada B2N 5E3

Apparently, when studying deterrents for bears associated with beehives,
they did have some promising results( in a side project (now being taken on
by another Masters student as a thesis) in keeping bears (and seemed to work
on deer as well) by using a few chemicals sprayed in the brush around the
perimeter of blueberry fields.

By way of this message I will ask Vilis to provide us an up-date of where
those studies are at this point and when results might be expected. I know
if they determine an effective and affordable method it would be a
significant breakthrough in terms of reducing wildlife/agriculture conflict
situations... perhaps at an international scale and furthering our ability
to share our environment with wildlife.

Tony

I seem to recall some discussion of deer repellents at the spring meeting -
is there something now available (the chemical that puts the smell in
Propane) or is it still being reviewed for use?? I just had a call from a
grape grower who was not very impressed when I suggested electric fencing
was the only long-term solution.

Hi David, By coincidence a friend who is a local farmer was
here today & talked about the deer getting in his garden,
A rope or string with pie plates saved him last year & so
far it has worked this year too. A number of years ago the
deer were eating trees as far up a they could reach until
his wife hung soap that smelled of lard & that worked too.
