Hi all,

I was minding my own business trudging along the trail near the end of a three hour hike at Crystal Crescent Beach PP this morning when an oversized fuzz ball jumped out in front of me, and then several others followed, all young Ruffed Grouse. Then the real commotion ensued as the adult male materialized in front of me, head down, tail up, wings flattened and complaining mightily. This bird was ready to duke it out with me. I managed several quick photos, mostly just parts of the bird at various angles. One photo was useable and the expression on this bird's face tells the tale. I left after about 20 seconds with the male crying in the woods as only this bird can do.

Photographic conditions were awful, fog, drizzle and gloomy light but I've posted two additional photos of a coastal scene of mixed Iris and Buttercup and Grass Pink Orchid, recently opened.

Besides confirming Ruffed Grouse for the atlas, I also found Fox Sparrow and Lincoln's Sparrow still singing brightly on territory, all repeat performers.

I long for sunny weather.

Hans
