Hi, all-

The Halifax Field Naturalists' butterfly field trip took place today, under
somewhat less than ideal sky conditions and with a bit of a breeze. As usual
we were in the Mount Uniacke area. This was a rather early date for the
trip, and so things were somewhat different than in previous years: There
were still a few Tiger Swallowtails around, but very few Ringlets and no
large fritillaries (although we did see a few Silver-Bordered).

There were many White Admirals, a couple of Harris' Checkerspots to compare
to the Pearl Crescents, and one Roadside Skipper, a lifer for me. There were
no Common Branded Skippers yet, nor any Bog Coppers in the usual place. One
participant claimed a Monarch. Other species included Red Admiral, a
smattering of skippers, and several Pink-Edged Sulphurs.

Peter Payzant
