Hi,

This late afternoon/early evening I headed out towards Fisherman's Reserve. I drove out towards Fisherman's Reserve and at the end of the cove left hand side of the causeway I found a group of shorebirds. Nice to see SB-Dowitchers early in the season in nearly breeding plumage, some already showed first moulting signs. I counted 45 dowitchers and 21 willets. Being spared from heavy rain, which I passed on the way out of town, I proceeded to the reserve to the end of the road. I was pleased to find nesting terns on the sandspit close to the sheds. Light wasn't favourable so I would call them Artic for now. Counted ~ 5 glued down to the ground and about the same number airborne, divebombing gulls. Two adults where carrying food to the nests, and in two nests I could see heads of downy chicks -not the ones visited by the fish carrying adults. Gulls are nesting on the island as well, Greater black-backed and Herring, with many chicks begging for food (two or three per
adult). I remember that terns used to nest in this location many years ago, but in recent years none where using the site. The current hardly qualifies as a colony, but a handful is better than none.

Cheers

Ulli
