Well, folks. As entertaining as this has been, I think it's time to end the conversation. One of the rules of most e-mail forums, sometimes written, sometimes unwritten, is that anything personal that arises from a post goes off line. If you think that someone is saying something offensive, you have three legitimate responses: 1. Write to the person privately to express your concern. 2) Write to the list administrator. 3) Ignore it -- chances are that there was no malicious intent in the first place. The thing is that the vast majority of our subscribers are interested in the natural history of Nova Scotia -- period. Any kind of flame war, no matter how gentle, or obscure, makes most of us uncomfortable and renders NatureNS a less secure place than it should be. One really great thing about NatureNS is that we almost always treat each other with respect. Everyone on this list contributes to understanding our natural world. Some of us do it through daily observations of the wild, others through fascinating and often touching personal stories, and others through sharing knowledge (scientific and otherwise) that few of us have. Let's celebrate the good things that this kind of forum can do. Accepting people for who and what they are is one of them -- and we've proven to be pretty good at that. Doug Linzey Administrator, NatureNS e-mail list
