June 19, Amherst Point Bird Sanctuary - Odes - dot-tailed whiteface,
Ulhler's Sundragons, Stream Cruisers, Four-spotted skimmers, racker-tailed
emerald and others not able to get id on.

Yesterday I did my second Breeding Bird Route at Shelburne. This was like
night and day in comparison to the Peggy's Cove route and was a joy to run.
Dorothy Poole accompanied me as my recorder. These routes are so much
better with someone along. Anyhow, there were two chimney swifts over
Shelburne. Of note along the Welshtown and Upper Port Clyde section there
were the most hermit thrushes that I have ever seen. In all we heard and
saw about 56 of these birds. Out of the 56, which would include those birds
seen and not recorded while doing the count, we saw probably about 35. On
the dirt road going around the Welshtown to Port Clyde route there were
hermit thrushes in the road in ones and twos the whole way along. One
black-throated blue warbler was singing and also seen by the both of us.

On a sad note there was a dead female ruffed grouse in the road with two
young standing over it. I believe a fast moving school bus might have been
the one to kill the grouse. It was on a straight away and I suspect the
bird was purposely run down. On the basis of the two young, if you would
have told me they were of age to fly, I would have said that you were crazy.
Both could fly though. I'm not sure what their chances of survival will
be as the two young could be no more than two weeks old.

Tons of red admirals were along the route and quite a few odes. Variable
dancers were quite prevalent in one location. I photographed another which
was a darner after the count. I still need to figure out the id of that
one. I did not focus on dragonflies until after the count.
