Hi All
This morning BB woke me up early and insisted we go
for a canoe paddle. So I selected Tern Island - one of
the choices she suggested!
Tern Island is a U or better a Y shapped fresh water
island that looks like it is a esker where 2 streams
joined. Prehaps 70 M in diameter depending upon water
levels. The center of the island is a shallow pond
with lots of weed growth. The island is prehaps 400 m
from the nearest shore.
Some years a small colony of common terns nest there.
Prehaps a secondary spot depending upon conditions.
This year none however.
But it wasn't without its birds. Four Spotted
Sandpipers were flying around. Two looked like adults
and the other two looked like chicks who were just
beginning to fly. They only made short flight of a few
meters.
A loon has her nest on the cobble beach with one egg.
The nest is very small - just a few water plants on
the cobble. She was swimming just off shore. It is
open to the lake so is easily spotted.
An Osprey was doing some fishing. As I passed another
island nearby it dove twice into the shallow water
near the weeds. Caught nothing either time. I would
assume it was targeting small mouth bass but couldn't
be sure. As the water warms the bass are very active
and are not easy to susprise. Nevertheless the lake
has a good population of them.
Flowers included Blue Flag which is now blooming along
the lake shore also the first Rose Pogonia that I have
seen this year.
The lake was covered with pollen from white pine or
other conifers. Sure puts a pile of nutrients into the
lake. Keeps it alive. A lot goes to the sea also so it
feeds a lot of things there. It would be interesting
to know the actual weight of pollen that feeds a lake.
Enjoy the summer - go for a paddle.
Paul
