June 5, 2007 - ROBIE TUFTS NATURE CENTRE IN WOLFVILLE AT DUSK: 55+ TOTAL
CHIMNEY SWIFTS counted by Ted Wolkowski and Jim Wolford et al. --
observations from 8:20 to 9:25 (Sunset at ??) -- most swifts entered chimney
from 9:01 to 9:09, hastened in by showers at 9:01 and drizzle -- warm night
(19 C.), humid, moderate to strong wind from southwest, mostly overcast with
bright patch to west-northwest -- DETAILS: 2 swifts entered at 8:58, 48+ in
at 9:02 to 9:04, 4 at 9:06, 1 laggard at 9:19.

June 6, 2007 - Ron Rafuse reports that an apparent MERLIN (he called it a
³chicken hawk² attracted some attention in downtown Wolfville this morning
at Joe¹s Food Emporium. It was first on a power line, and then flew/dove
after a small bird, probably a house sparrow, into some very low bushes
adjacent to the front of Joe¹s restaurant.

So far MERLINS have made only about three appearances at the swifts¹ chimney
at dusk this year, and twice they were just fly-bys, to or from the
dykelands to the north. And I don¹t think anyone really knows where they
are nesting in town this year.

This evening at 7 p.m. at the Irving Centre in Wolfville, Richard Stern saw
and heard 2 MERLINS together flying from west to east. For the Maritime
Breeding Bird Atlas (my square) he deemed them a ³pair in breeding habitat².
