Yes, Bob, I did mean red-berried elder, which I just call red elderberry;
the edible species that flowers in July is common elderberry to me.  Hard to
believe that Halifax could be ahead of anything here in The Valley!
Although you always seem to get flowering coltsfoot before us.   Cheers from

Hi Jim et al,

I"m wondering if you really meant Red-berried Elder or Scarlet Elder, rather
than Red Elderberry which usually flowers much later in the season?  The
former is in bloom at numerous locations in Halifax just now but perhaps
your spring is that much more advanced than ours.
