Good afternoon, all. Is there renewed expectation that Piping Plovers might breed at Conrad's Beach in Lawrencetown? I have never seen one, and I've been going there for about ten years now. This morning, around 8:30- 9:00 am, I was finishing off my coffee and doing the Globe and Mail crossword puzzle in the parking lot of Conrad's beach, when I noticed several people toting camping equipment back from the beach to their vehicles. (Two vehicles, NB plates.) I waited until they left, and then walked out to the beach. On the way, I rounded up their empties. (Hey, a nickel's a nickel, right?) The temp was around 5 deg C, overcast with light drizzle and chilly winds. The thing that I noticed immediately was new signage to protect piping plover habitat, and a roped off area to the right (west) of the boardwalk. The notices on the posts featured Hans Toom's photos of the Piping Plover. I saw nothing of interest on the beach, but one Eastern Kingbird, flying from one large stone to the next on the beach, making its way gradually to the west. Strange that it didn't land on the signposts! It almost looked as if it was having trouble flying, since its flights from one stone to the next were quite short. cheers, Bob Lindsay
