May 11, 2007- I drove TO HUBBARDS for an important government announcement,
but, to kill some time, I did a walk in LEWIS LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK: lots of
BLACK FLIES (some biting), OVENBIRD and other warblers singing (not many),
lots of MAYFLOWERS, a COMMON LOON on the lake, WILD STRAWBERRY flower-buds
(just a few), and two photos of arboreal LICHENS (Usnea spp., one with lots
of fruiting cups, and brown Bryoria?).

The government announcement came from N.S. Environment¹s Mark Parent and
Nat. Resources¹ David Morse and declared the Crown lands within the
Blandford Game Sanctuary as a formal NATURE RESERVE, a much higher form of
protection from such things as forestry, mining, ATVs, etc. This was
well-attended by a variety of bureaucrats, environmental groups,
naturalists, etc. (and written up in both the Daily News and Herald over the
next two days).

I was pleased to meet lichenologist Frances Anderson for the first time.
She and Troy McMullin are working on a book on Nova Scotia lichens.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville, 542-9204
