The May meeting of the Halifax Centre of the RASC (Royal Astronomical =20=

Society of Canada) will be held Friday,
May 11th at 8:00 PM in Room L176 of the Loyola Building at Saint Mary's =20=

University. A map can be found
at the Centre's web site (see below). Members of the general public are =20=

welcome.
=A0
The main presentation will be:
=A0
"The Abbey Ridge Observatory: A Robotic Research Observatory"=A0
=A0 by Dave Lane
=A0
In the Spring of 2003 the robotic Abbey Ridge Observatory (ARO) was
built not far (but far enough!) from Halifax. Its design consists of
many off-the-shelf components, however it also includes many hardware
and software features designed by the speaker, the most significant
being a unique dome-control system and its automation software "Abbey
Ridge Auto Pilot", which was written specifically for ARO.
In this talk,=A0Mr. Lane will discuss what was involved in creating a =20=

reliable
robotic observatory useful for (small telescope) research projects
and in doing so will describe and demonstrate (if time permits) its
capabilities.=A0 He will also show some of the results obtained relating =
=20
to the two
projects currently underway: supernovae searching (with the Puckett
Observatory World Supernova Search) and observations of (mainly
Cepheid) variable stars.
=A0
Dave Lane has been the astronomy technician at SMU for nearly
15 years and is presently the 1st VP (national) of the Royal
Astronomical Society of Canada. He also runs a micro-software-company
that develops software for amateur astronomers.
