Sheila McCurdy and David McDermott discovered last evening an active woodpecker cavity, so she wanted me to go back with her late this afternoon to identify its occupants. We had to wait quite awhile, but the young entertained us with a soft serenade from inside their cavity. Finally the mother Hairy Woodpecker came along and fed one or more of them, went inside the cavity, peaked outside for a spell, came out and looked inside some more and then flew off across the pond. We saw and heard a male Downey drumming nearby and heard lots of Flickers "talking" back and forth to one anoher. Jean Timpa inWolfville
