Subject: Piping Plovers and Pileated Woodpecker

I took a tour to Martinique Beach PP this morning but unfortunately it was high tide so any chances of finding waders was minimal. However, on route, I was delighted to encounter a Pileated Woodpecker excavating a telephone pole. There was sawdust flying everywhere. This is my first experience with this woodpecker nesting in a telephone pole. If the Martinique Beach atlas square does not have confirmation for this species yet, this may be it. Look opposite house 205 on the road to Martinique Beach, just past the turnoff to West Petpeswick, but this location is on a curve and it is dangerous to park nearby. I don't normally reveal nest locations but this one is on a busy road and high up on the pole so disturbance to the birds should be minimal.

At Martinique Beach I found two pairs of Piping Plovers. With one pair I was privileged to witness courtship and mating behaviour. Caution: the photos are adult content, at least in the Piping Plover World.

Hans
