The most striking male decided it was time to show is stuff by perching on top of the feeder, ruffling up the head feathers, wagging the tail up and down, and flashing his intensely colour wings. She though was much happier having a feed all day after a long flight I think. Other arrivals this weekend, Ruby crowned kinglets, flickers, chipping sparrow, and piedbilled grebe - First for the property. I just did a quick Google Images for "female red-winged blackbird" and - no surprise - came up with dozens of photos which will give you some good comparisons with your own photos. Very striking markings on the female RWB I've always thought. Cheers! By the time I got my camera a blue jay had arrived and startled it so that it went up into the tree. It was about the size of a starling, definitely larger than a sparrow. It did get a few pictures and while it does look like a female red-winged blackbird, and it was heavily streaked with black, and the eyestripe was white with a hint of yellow near the eye. Any ideas as to what this might be?
