I ran an early survey on my Salmon River Rd. route in CBRM on Friday night. A pretty good night for owling - no wind at all, and clear skies made the starlight bright enough to get the coyotes howling. But there was some interference from water runoff noise. Also, it was cold (0 to -2) and there was only a small crescent moon, so not ideal conditions for vocal owls.

I saw one Great Horned Owl fly past as I approached the first survey stop, about 10 minutes before the survey period. During the survey, I heard 4 Great Horned Owls, 4 Barreds and 4 Saw-whets. This is roughly half the number of owls I usually get on this route on a good night, when the weather is a little balmier and the moon close to full. There was also one brief call that might have been a Long-eared, but it was over-ridden by a pair of noisy Barreds nearby, and not repeated. Also had Am. Woodcock at the first 3 stops, before it got too dark and cold, and 2 Wood Frogs.

All in all, a great night to be out.

Cheers,
Susann Myers
