Years ago, the kestrel was "Sparrow Hawk". I believe anything is =
possible for any bird or animal.=20

Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Kestrel and other birds

Just to comment on Kestrel hunting small birds. I'm not sure it's that =
unusual. A few years ago, I came to the rescue a Kestrel that had =
become trapped in the glassed-in portico of a large grocery store. =
Apparently, it had been chasing the sparrows that continuously =
congregate in a large outdoor roofed area where the shopping carts are =
parked outside the grocery store entrance. Unfortunately, it hit a =
window and became disoriented and fell into the shopping carts. When I =
happened along, someone was just approaching the cart to take a look. =
The bird took fright and flew off, but went right into the glassed-in =
portico, struck the glass wall and fell to the floor. I captured and =
carried the bird out to a grassy area across the parking lot and set it =
down to recover for awhile. About ten minutes later, it took off and =
flew right back over to perch on a small tree right beside to the store =
entrance. Employees in the store said the bird was regularly seen =
hunting for sparrows in the area above the shopping carts, but that was =
the first time anyone had seen it crash into a window. Btw, there's now =
a plastic scare-owl guarding the same area and it doesn't seem to do =
much to deter the sparrows. =20

Firstly, sorry for the second message, I didn=92t think my earlier one =
had gone through.

As for the Kestrel, it was seen by two people and it sat on the lawn =
within 20 feet of the house as well as coming within about 5 feet the =
first time as he almost ran into the window as he left with the Junco. =
It may very well have been hungry as the first time he came it was after =
the last snow storm and then again three days later.

  Happy Birding
