For those of you taken with Trevor Herriot's contribution to the CBC documentary described below, I also strongly recommend his 2000 book, River in a Dry Land: A Prairie Passage, one of the best books of prairie nature writing from the past decade. The Globe & Mail commented on it: "Every once in a long while, a book comes out that is so entirely persuasive, so beautifully written, so well informed, so brimming with humanity, so obviously inspired, that it changes my way of viewing the world... River in a Dry Land is one of these rare finds."

Subject: [NatureNS] CBC Radio Program on Grassland Birds

For those that missed the program when it was first broadcast, CBC Radio One is re-broadcasting the wonderful two-part series discussing the past, present, and future of Canada's grassland birds. The show features two well-known prairie naturalists, Stuart Houston and Trevor Herriot. Here is the promo tag:

  Wednesday, April 11, 2007, 9:00 p.m.
  11/04/2007

"Part One of Pastures Unsung tonight on Ideas. From the Burrowing Owl to the Sprague's Pipit, grassland birds are declining faster than any other group of birds on the continent. Regina naturalist Trevor Herriot travels with ornithologist and historian Dr. Stuart Houston to examine the plight of prairie birds one hundred and twenty-five years after explorer John Macoun pronounced the great Canadian grasslands fit for the plough."

Part 2 is presented the following night at 9:00 p.m.. Here is Ideas web site:
