=93Celebrate Urban Birds!=94
Nationwide event brings attention to urban greening and birds in the city

Ithaca, NY=AD-Amid the concrete jungle of cities, nature can be=20
resilient-=ADgiven the chance. Urban parks, gardens, and other green areas=
=20
can host a surprising diversity of birds=AD-whether colorful resident=
 pigeons=20
and adaptable hawks, or far-flung travelers such as warblers and orioles=20
looking for a place to rest during journeys of thousands of miles.

During May 10=9613, 2007, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology invites city=20
residents to =93Celebrate Urban Birds!=94 through activities such as=
 gardening,=20
bird watching, art, and science. These events will raise awareness about=20
birds in the city=ADand help scientists learn how birds use urban habitats.

People of all ages and backgrounds can participate in any way they wish, on=
=20
their own or with local organizations. To aid scientists, they can watch=20
city birds for at least 10 minutes, check off 15 target species of birds,=20
and send the information through the mail or the Internet to the Cornell=20
Lab of Ornithology=92s Urban Birds Studies project.

=93It is vital that we understand how birds are affected by available urban=
=20
green spaces, including parks, rooftop gardens, and even potted plants on=20
balconies,=94 says project leader Karen Purcell. =93Bringing people=92s=
 attention=20
to urban nature is essential for global conservation awareness and efforts=
=20
to help birds.=94

More than 100 organizations will host special events as part =93Celebrate=20
Urban Birds,=94 including schools, public gardens, nature centers, museums,=
=20
and parks. People are also invited to join activities on their own. While=20
supplies last, everyone who signs up will receive a Celebration Kit in=20
English and Spanish with a colorful urban birds poster, educational=20
materials about birds and urban greening, data form, and packet of=20
sunflower seeds to plant in pots and gardens.

Learn more and sign up at=20
<http://www.urbanbirds.org/celebration>www.urbanbirds.org/celebration.=20
Despite the dramatic increase in urbanization, we can still help the birds=
=20
and connect with nature. Join the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and =93Celebrat=
