Subject: Sanderlings and Other Nature Notes

I enjoyed a brisk walk in beautiful late winter conditions at Martinique Beach PP this morning, shortly after sunrise. The first section of beach before the headland has lost a lot of sand over the winter and resembles a gravel beach in places but once you round the headland the sand is intact, sure to please the imminently arriving Piping Plovers. A small troop of 11 Sanderlings were working the shoreline along here plus a larger shorebird that I just glimpsed before it flew off, possibly a Killdeer. The productive ponds, bird wise, at the eastern end of the beach are still frozen. On my return I photographed a mirage to the southwest. A mirage is a true optical effect caused by the difference in refractive indices between hot and cold air, resulting in the bending of light.

Five photographs of the Sanderlings are here http://www.hanstoom.com/Highlights/Highlight65.html ending with two mirage photos.

A more general series of photos starts here, mostly dawn images from Crystal Crescent Beach PP. http://www.hanstoom.com/Highlights/Highlight56.html

Our resident Ring-necked Pheasants are showing indications that they will breed on our property again this year.

Hans
