Hi All
Yesterday I stopped by Gaspereaux lake for a few
hours. The lake is still iced but leads are opening up
around the rocks and shallow places also where there
is a current.
The Black Backed Gulls - a few - have returned to the
nesting colony. I saw about 10 - some sitting on the
rocks - other flying around. A couple of eagles flew
by also - very high in the air.
There was a few ducks also. Four pairs of Mallards, 2
pairs of Blacks and 3 single Black males. As a female
returned to one of the males as I watched, prehaps the
females are laying already.
I walked on the channel trail on the North side. First
time I was down there. The middle is open, the sides
iced. In one place just at the edge of the ice and
open water, under a tree in an sunny spot, a hatch of
little flies was taking place. The flies were about
the size of an snow flea and could jump sideways very
well. maybe 8 - 10 cms at one jump on a 45 degree
angle to where they were pointed. There was lots of
them so I suspect the ducks were feeding on similar
hatches. It would take a while to get a meal!
A very nice walk.
Enjoy the spring
Paul
